On Saturday night the Mountain View Community Center hosted its second night of Golden Gloves action in the open divisions. There were three golden gloves contests in the 201+, 152 and 141 pound divisions plus nine show bouts. The 152 pound matchup between Clinton Chavez vs. Adam Reyes was an excellent bout with a verdict that divided those in attendance. Herman Ortiz captured a decision over Wesley Buster at 201+ which also left the audience debating the outcome. While Marcus Ewing left little doubt that he was the better man against Edgar Yguade at 141 pounds.

IMG_0068Bout #12, Open, 201+ lbs. Herman Ortiz (Castro/Torito) won by UD over Wesley Buster (UnattachedIMG_0047). Although their actual weights were not given, there appeared to be some serious tonnage in the ring for the evening’s final bout. It was clear from the opening bell that both boxers had the power to end things early. In the opening round Buster took a standing 8-count the result of heavy shots to the head. Suddenly it was Ortiz who was on the canvas, but it was quickly changed to a push. Ortiz was the smaller of the two giants and he seemed to be looking to land right hand leads in an attempt to go home early.

In the second round Ortiz seemed to land the cleaner punches and appeared to hurt Buster. Round three saw Buster land some serious leather to the head of Ortiz, hurting his smaller foe. Both fighters were taking some deep breaths the entire fight, causing their offense to be terminated early due to a shortage of oxygen. Each fighter seemed ready to go on several occasions, but the other fighter had nothing left to end matters. It was an entertaining bout that left the audience split when Ortiz received the decision.

Bout #11, Open, 152 lbs. Clinton Chavez (Hideout) won by SD over Adam Reyes (Martinez Boxing). This was Reyes second fight in two nights, but he had plenty of energy in the opening round. He dominated the round against the much taller Chavez with some blistering body shots. Surprisingly, the rangy Chavez failed to use his excellent jab.

IMG_0031In the second round Chavez came to life, scoring with some nice body shots on the inside. This appeared to surprise his shorter foe, but not for long. The stocky Reyes is a pretty good boxer in his IMG_0004own right and started returning fire effectively. The third round was a repeat of the second; both rounds were very close and fought at a high skill level. I gave the second round to Chavez and the third to Reyes. There was little doubt the decision would lead to controversy regardless of the outcome. Chavez moves on to the finals where he’ll face Adam Marquez for a trip to the regionals.

IMG_9939Bout #10, Open, 141 lbs. Marcus Ewing (TNT) won by UD over Edgar Yguade (Guns & Armory). This was a clinic by the smooth boxing Ewing against his game opponent. I’ve seen Ewing on several occasions over the past few years and he’s solid both on offense and defense. At times the taller Yguade appeared hurt but would fire back in an effort to turn things around. Ewing was comfortable fighting off the ropes and landing some nice counter punches.

This afternoon he’ll face hard punching Abel Vera for the title and a trip to the regionals. Like Ewing, I’ve seen the less experienced Vera on several occasions and he has power in both hands. This should be an excellent matchup with the potential to be the fight of the tournament. It will come down to Ewing’s experience and counter punching against Vera’s two fisted attack. You don’t want to miss this clash of styles.

Bout #9, Age 12, 110 lbs. Miguel Uriosteralli (Rocks Boxing) won by UD over Ramon Cristan (Clovis). Uriosteralli was in command the entire bout against his game opponent.

Bout #8, Age 13, 140 lbs. Rudolfo Sauzameda (TNT) won by SD over Ray Joe Horton (Unattached). This was an entertaining bout in which Sauzameda landed the cleaner punches. Horton was determined, making it a competitive match.

Bout #7, Novice, 138 lbs. Eberardo Lopez (Henry’s Golden Gloves) won by UD over Elvis Cortez (Azteca Boxing). This was a contested contest with Cortez having his moments. This was an enjoyable bout to watch.

Bout #6, Novice, 175 lbs. Bobby Spedalieri (Unattached) won by SD over Jordan Gregory (Warriors). This bout had a lot of action with Spedalieri trying to solve the southpaw style of Gregory.

Bout #5, Age 9, 55 lbs. Elroy Sandoval (LC Pal) won by UD over Gideon Alcon Jr. (Martinez Boxing). Sandoval was very aggressive but Alcon maintained his composure the entire contest. This was a close contest.

Bout #4, Novice, 130 lbs. Christina Gonzales (Gonzales Boxing) won by UD over Adah Frankovic (Warriors). This was another competitive match in which Frankovic started strong but Gonzales came on as the match unfolded.

Bout #3, Open, 120 lbs. Elyza Peralta (TNT) won by UD over Dacia Jacquez (Power and Glory). Anyone who thinks females don’t belong in boxing have never seen Peralta fight. She has skills as good as the boys and knows how to use the ring to her advantage. Give Jacquez credit, it takes two to make a fight and she pressed Peralta all three rounds.

Bout #2, Age 10, 69 lbs. Yoruba Moreu (Moreu Boxing) won by UD over Isiah Sandoval (LC Pal). Ten year old Moreu, a southpaw, has had over fifty bouts in his young career and it showed. Sandoval didn’t stand around, pressing Moreu all three rounds.

Bout #1, Open, 151 lbs. Jasper Alvarado (Punch’s Boxing) won by UD over Tim Ruiz (Amarillo Lions Boxing). This was a solid contest with both boxers possessing skills. Both are solid boxers who know how to set up an opponent for combinations while displaying solid defensive ability.

This was an entertaining evening, with three open division golden glove bouts on the 12 bout program. Sunday afternoon should have some exciting bouts, with the winners moving on to the regionals which will also take place in Albuquerque.
